What Is FSC Chain of Custody Certification?

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) chain-of-custody certification tracks material from a certified source through each stage of processing, manufacturing and distribution, so that a finished product can be verified as containing wood from a certified or controlled source when it reaches the buyer.
What the Standards Cover
Chain-of-custody certification is governed by a set of FSC standards, including requirements for tracking material through single or multiple sites (FSC-STD-40-003 and FSC-STD-40-004), requirements for sourcing FSC Controlled Wood (FSC-STD-40-005), and requirements for using FSC trademarks correctly (FSC-STD-50-001). A company holding chain-of-custody certification is assessed against these standards by an accredited certification body and issued a licence code.
What It Does Not Automatically Mean
Holding chain-of-custody certification does not automatically mean every product a company sells is FSC-certified — certified status depends on whether certified material was available and used for that specific order. Buyers who require FSC-certified (rather than FSC Controlled Wood or non-FSC) material should confirm this explicitly at the enquiry stage.
